new year dawns

the fun began at sunset
the rains were poised
though hadn’t fallen yet

as darkness fades, what do i hear
the rains have brought life to life
the dawning of a new year

trumpeting in the shower
like an elephant in the bathroom
reminding us of the power

to not be trampled underfoot
or swept under by the broom
from every branch down to our root

we must reach out
as we dig within
be silent as we shout

cultivate stillness
find the calm
amidst the madness

waiting to see what new rain spawns
open your heart to the light
eyes reopen as a new year dawns
