style(1) and readability

A dear friend of mine for about thirty years is a lovely little program of UNIX heritage, called “style.” Modern versions of style(1) handle most of the readability metrics mentioned in the following article. Along with my long-standing relationship with style(1), I have maintained an immense interest in readability. At some companies I worked at in the 1980s and 1990s, I was instructed to “write all customer documentation at an eighth grade reading level.” Some of you know my mixed feelings on that sort of mandate.

Please read the following article and let me know your thoughts. Happy reading! Tschüss.
