toe caves

dissolving beneath my toes
disappearing from under my soles
i feel the grains of sand subside
with each retreating wave

slowly slipping
away with the tide
toes left gripping
at what they hide

each beachcombing sole knows
their lost sand collects in shoals
relentless ebb and tide they ride
rhythm of each wave they save

sea breeze blows
empty sand holes
long yarns inside
each tiny cave

in shallows where small fishes school
ever-changing shoreline alive
stirred from many a primordial pool
hidden within this secret enclave

slowly slipping
away with the tide
toes left gripping
at what they hide
