morning hunter

the hunter hangs high
up in the sky
hunter hovers nigh
ready to pounce
and take its toll
take of this shoal
all that grows

only a few days since
waning crescent’s winking glints
off hunter’s shoulder dropping hints
alas fifty one minutes later
a twenty-eighth of a day
later each night and into morn

now the crescent has gone away
to hide within the bright of day
for a while shall morning hunter stay
dogs at the feet ne’er astray
thine arrow guides the way
whence dark of night holds sway

delicious breeze fills with delight
the reprieve brought by gift of night
lit by many a dancing sprite
sumptuous summer shade
far from noontime’s raid
and to these sprites softly bayed
