before dawn

awake before dawn
this garden yearns for flight
aloft on the fragrance of night
hear the tree boughs yawn

great sea of stillness
blanketed in inky blackness
break free from night’s harness
feel dawn’s sweet caress

predawn’s dark soundscape
sets ripe stage for songsters’ calls
voices cascade like sonicfalls
fabric of night reshape

inky indigo
diluted by day
bottom feeders play
responding to the glow

day begins to flow
within the banks of sunlights stream
sediments are set agleam
brain aspires to know

echoes within these eyes
replay the early lack of light
while recent risers take flight
surprise within their cries

even in the brightest noon
subtle strokes of dawn still dwell
even as tides’ maelstroms swell
’tis always night that brings the swoon

awake before dawn
await the retiring of the wren
instilled within to yearn again
to hear the tree boughs yawn
