majestic quilt

alternating bands
bushy cotton strands
threads of corn silk
woven across the land

cultivated quilt
glistening green gilt
stitched by broad berms
desert dressed to the hilt

inebriated land was parched
devoid of maple, elm or larch
now drunken on imported wine
draped in cellulose and starch

beyond the quilt a row of palms
whispering on the wind their psalms
even in this ardent swelter
potent bounty instills calm

row by row lush tapestry
grows ever in its majesty
until boll and cob have ripened
their quilt garners no amnesty
