open the cover

you’ll never know
what you might have found
until you open the cover

each chapter unfolds
as the reader beholds
the story wrapped in
sheaves of heather

you are the author
of this tangled tale
twists of trite teasings
curves so very clever

you’ll never know
what you might have found
until you open the cover

the song remains the same
yet each spring you toil
digging in wintered soil
roll in fields of clover

turn over a new leaf
till the old ones under
a spark of something different
new avenues to ponder

you’ll never know
what you might have found
until you open the cover

within the village tender
deep hidden in dark wood
both day and night
become your tinder

each feeling set alight
encapsulated
once enflamed
sparking awesome wonder

you’ll never know
what you might have found
until you open the cover
